Composable entropy and deviation from macroscopic equilibrium
We formulate, under general conditions, the problem of maximisation of the total entropy of the system, assumed to be in a composable form, for fixed total value of the constrained quantity. We derive the general form of the composability function and also point out the criterion which leads to a violation of the zeroth law of thermodynamics. ∗e-mail: [email protected]
متن کاملBig Entropy Fluctuations in Statistical Equilibrium: the Macroscopic Kinetics
Large entropy fluctuations in an equilibrium steady state of classical mechanics were studied in extensive numerical experiments on a simple 2–freedom strongly chaotic Hamiltonian model described by the modified Arnold cat map. The rise and fall of a large separated fluctuation was shown to be described by the (regular and stable) ”macroscopic” kinetics both fast (ballistic) and slow (diffusive...
متن کاملBoltzmann’s Entropy and Large Deviation Lyapunov Functionals for Closed and Open Macroscopic Systems
I give a brief overview of the resolution of the apparent problem of reconciling time symmetric microscopic dynamic with time asymmetric equations describing the evolution of macroscopic variables. I then show how the large deviation function of the stationary state of the microscopic system can be used as a Lyapunov function for the macroscopic evolution equations. —————————————————————————— G...
متن کاملMacroscopic and Microscopic Thermal Equilibrium
We study the nature of and approach to thermal equilibrium in isolated quantum systems. An individual isolated macroscopic quantum system in a pure or mixed state is regarded as being in thermal equilibrium if all macroscopic observables assume rather sharply the values obtained from thermodynamics. Of such a system (or state) we say that it is in macroscopic thermal equilibrium (MATE). A stron...
متن کاملReconstructing equilibrium entropy and enthalpy profiles from non-equilibrium pulling.
The Jarzynski identity can be applied to instances when a microscopic system is pulled repeatedly but quickly along some coordinate, allowing the calculation of an equilibrium free energy profile along the pulling coordinate from a set of independent non-equilibrium trajectories. Using the formalism of Wiener stochastic path integrals in which we assign temperature-dependent weights to Langevin...
